What is an Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification?

An Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatch certification exceeds all national requirements and allows emergency communications dispatchers to handle emergency calls appropriately and provide best possible responses. Learn more specifics in this blog.

If you follow Kings III at all, you are most likely aware that we are proud to showcase that among other training and certifications, our emergency communications center’s operators are Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatch (AEMD) certified. You can probably gather that this is a good thing, but you may not know exactly what this entails and how it may differentiate emergency communications and dispatch centers from one another. This blog post will review what the AEMD certification entails in order for you to get a better idea of whom Kings III entrusts in all emergency situations and the quality of response that we expect to be received by our emergency callers.

At an overview level, the Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatch certification allows Emergency Medical Dispatchers in emergency communications centers to receive training in both communications and Medical Protocol in order to utilize the proper care and deliver the appropriate response in the event of an emergency call. This means that AEMD certified operators have been trained not only to make their callers feel comfortable and appropriately communicate the information needed in the situation, but also to provide the appropriate response in order to best alleviate the situation.

AEMD certification is not required of all emergency dispatch centers and is considered a further and higher form of training than what is currently required. In fact, not all 911 dispatch centers require this certification for their dispatchers. However, it has become the benchmark for all EMD training programs, as it is such an effective training method. The certification not only meets, but in many cases exceeds all national criteria required of emergency dispatchers, including those set by:

– U.S. Department of Transportation
– ASTM
– National Association of EMS Physicians

An Advanced Emergency Medical Dispatch certified emergency communications center dispatcher has been trained to effectively:

– Provide the utmost quality of service to the caller at hand
– Prioritize emergency calls received in a safe manner
– Distinguish a caller’s Chief Complaint
– Increase upon a scene’s safety
– Execute Dispatch Life Support
– Perform and provide instructions for CPR
– Administer critical Pre-Arrival instructions for both normal and high-risk childbirth situations

While many people think Kings III’s emergency communications center deals only with elevator entrapments and drownings, this is not the case. We regularly receive multitudes of calls regarding innumerous types of emergencies. This is why we consider the AEMD certification such an important one for our dispatchers to hold. It is one of the many ways that we actively work to ensure that emergency callers receive the quality of service and assistance required of critical and often scary situations.
