CODE COMPLIANCE DATABASE

Understanding emergency phone codes and laws and their jurisdiction is paramount to our success in the industry and is something that we take great pride in.  In addition to pool phone laws, typically enforced at the state level, here are the key codes to know:

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires all Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) to provide direct, equal access to their services for people with disabilities. The International Building Code (IBC) provides safeguards from hazards associated with the built environment and addresses the design and installation of innovative materials that meet or exceed public health and safety goals. These two codes are followed at the national level.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) serves a wide-ranging engineering community and is instrumental in the development of codes and standards. There are several different versions of ASME, classified by the year in which they were amended. ASME 17.1 references Emergency Operation and Signaling Devices. The ASME code year followed typically is enforced state by state. To learn more about your state level laws (including pool phone laws), use the selection tools below.

Our table shows information on ASME A17.1, which specifically addresses elevator emergency communications.

If your state adheres to ASME 2019+ or IBC 2018+, there are specific 2-way communications requirements your elevators must meet. Select a code to see below if this applies to your state. (Note: IBC 2018 has specific distinctions from ASME 2019. IBC 2021 acknowledges ASME as the elevator code authority and defers to its video & two-way communication requirements, so they are grouped together for sake of filtering.)

“With Kings III, I’m no longer left wondering if my communities will be able to get someone on the phone if there is elevator trouble. How do I know? I test it, and it works! They have provided me with peace of mind at my communities.”
